Is it Safe to travel to Cancun?

That is a very common question every year. Before I answer that question, let me ask you a question. Do you plan on selling drugs in Mexico?

If the answer to that question is “Yes”, then you should probably rethink your plans and not go to Mexico.

If the answer to that question is “No”, then yes, it is safe to go to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and all over the Riviera Maya. The violence you read about is not close to the tourist destination of Cancun. This map shows reported violence in Mexico as an aggregate of the last 10 years. Small purple dots represent less than 10 reported incidents. You see that big yellow circle, that’s Cancun, pretty far from the violence, the red pins. Juarez (dangerous) is about 2,100 miles away Riviera Maya (safe) which is further than the distance from Boston to Denver.

While we have your attention, let’s address the other million dollar question, “Is it safe to drink the water in Mexico?”. If you are at a nice resort, yes. If you are at a small hole in the wall taco stand with 3 donkeys in the kitchen, no.
