Some spanish to get the most out of spring break in Mexico

Your spring break will go better in every respect if you know some Spanish phrases and words. Why? Socially, it’s helpful to be able to at least ask people their names and if they’d like to dance. Personally, it helps you to be able to hail a taxi and ask for a drink. Learning these phrases also makes you more culturally fluent. So, here are some useful phrases to make your Mexico vacation not only more fun, but easier as well.

If you are dancing or at a party, the following are useful phrases. (Note that, in Spanish, question marks go at the beginning and end of questions.)

  • ¿Como te llamas? – What’s your name?
  • ¿Quieres bailar? – Would you like to dance?
  • Te invito una copa? – Can I buy you a drink?
  • Tú eres hermosa – You are beautiful
  • ¿Querrías salir conmigo? – Would you like to go out with me?
  • ¿Me dás tu número? – Can I have your phone number?

Planning to party? These are phrases to order in a bar.

  • Otra cerveza por favor – Another beer, please.
  • Un tarro de cerveza por favor – A pitcher of beer, please.
  • Tengo sed – I’m thirsty
  • ¡Yo pago por esas bebidas! – Those drinks are on me!
  • ¿Cuánto te debo? – How much do I owe you?
  • Beber- To drink
  • ¿Cuánto cuesta? – How much is it?
  • ¿Que hay para picar? – What is there to eat around here? (snack food)

For navigating your way into town and navigating your way within it, the following are useful.

  • ¿Dónde puedo coger un taxi? – Where can I catch a taxi?
  • Lléveme a… – Take me to [your destination]…
  • Tengo resaca – I have a hangover
  • El camarero – Bartender
  • El gorila – Bouncer
