When To Go To South Padre Island For Spring Break
SPI is a small island that drives in from all over Texas, so the peak weeks arrive hard and the strip is genuinely quiet outside them — more so than Panama City, which draws from a wider spread of states. If you want the beach concerts and the full scene, the weeks of March 8 and March 15 are the ones. Any other week is a beach holiday, not a spring break.
| Week beginning | Colleges on break | Share | How busy |
|---|---|---|---|
| February 22 | 17 | 2.8% | Quiet |
| March 1 | 129 | 21.5% | Shoulder |
| March 8 | 209 | 34.8% | Peak |
| March 15 | 186 | 30.9% | Peak |
| March 22 | 51 | 8.5% | Shoulder |
| March 29 | 9 | 1.5% | Quiet |
- Peak —
- busiest and liveliest, and the first weeks to sell out. Book early.
- Shoulder —
- good rates, still plenty of other groups around.
- Quiet —
- cheapest rates and the widest hotel choice.
Together the weeks of March 8 and March 15 account for 66% of all U.S. colleges — which is why South Padre Island is at its loudest, and its most expensive, in those two weeks. Look up your school's exact 2027 dates before you pick a week.
What A South Padre Island Spring Break Costs
Your package price is locked in up front — that is the number that matters, and it already covers the room, the food and drink, the transfers and the taxes. Flights and spending money are optional extras you control, and they vary by departure city, so we show them separately rather than bundling them into a bigger headline number.

Can you drink on the beach at South Padre Island?
Yes — and it is the main reason to pick SPI over the Florida beaches. Alcohol is permitted on the South Padre beach, unlike Panama City Beach, which bans it on the sand for the whole of March, and Fort Lauderdale, which restricts it on the public beach. Glass containers are banned on the SPI beach, so bring cans. The drinking age is still 21 and it is enforced.
Is the $549 South Padre package all-inclusive?
No. The $549 covers a beachfront room at the Isla Grand Beach Resort, all U.S. taxes and fees, five nights, up to four people per room, and on-site Go Blue staff. Food, drinks and airport transfers are not included — like Panama City Beach, the package assumes most groups drive in. Budget meals separately when comparing it to the international all-inclusives.
South Padre or Panama City Beach — which is better?
They are the same price at $549, both domestic, both room-only, both 21-and-up. The deciding factor is usually two things. First, the beach: alcohol is allowed on the sand at SPI and banned at PCB through March, so the SPI day scene is on the beach and the PCB one is inside the clubs. Second, where you are driving from: SPI is the Texas and Southwest pick, PCB draws from the Southeast. If you are flying either way, compare both against Cancún at $699, which is all-inclusive with an 18 drinking age.
See Panama City packagesDo I need a passport for South Padre Island?
No. South Padre is in Texas, so a valid U.S. photo ID is all you need. Worth knowing that the island sits close to the Mexican border, but nothing on a Go Blue package crosses it — you will not need a passport at any point in the week.
What is the legal drinking age at South Padre?
Twenty-one, and it is enforced — SPI and Cameron County add significant police presence through the spring break weeks and around the beach concerts. If a large part of your group is under 21, the international destinations have an 18 drinking age and will be a very different week.
What is there to do at South Padre for spring break?
The day scene is on the sand and the night scene is on Padre Boulevard. Clayton’s is the biggest beach bar on the island — a massive outdoor stage that books national acts, plus five bars. Louie’s Backyard is the most famous, with a deck out over the Gulf and live music. Wanna-Wanna is the laid-back tiki option with the best sunset on the island, Tequila Sunset is the late-night dance floor on Padre Blvd, and Hard Rocks has been running live bands since the eighties. Schlitterbahn Waterpark is on the island itself if you want a day off the beach.
Is South Padre Island safe for spring break?
For most students, yes, with standard precautions. The island adds heavy event policing during the spring break weeks, and a Go Blue host is on-site all week. Keep your group together, watch your drinks, use rideshare at night, and remember glass is banned on the beach. Our South Padre safety guide has the current local rules and links to the City of South Padre Island visitor guidance.
