Freeport Spring Break: The Complete Guide

Freeport Spring Break: The Complete Guide
Short answer: Freeport is the cheapest way to do the Bahamas with us — packages from $699 per person, an 18 drinking age, and a 30-minute flight from Fort Lauderdale. It is also the calmest destination we sell. Everything happens around Lucaya Beach and the Port Lucaya Marketplace, the crowds are smaller than anywhere in Mexico, and that is either exactly what your group wants or the reason to pick Nassau instead.

What Freeport spring break is actually like

Grand Bahama is the northernmost of the big Bahamian islands, 55 miles off Florida, and Freeport is its main town. For spring break you will actually be in Lucaya, the beach-and-marina district on the south shore where the hotels are. The center of it is the Port Lucaya Marketplace — an open-air cluster of 30-plus bars, restaurants, and shops around a marina, with live music most nights and the Count Basie Square stage in the middle.

That is the whole scene, and it is walkable. Our three hotels are within a five-minute walk or water taxi of the marketplace and the beach. There is no strip of mega-clubs; the nights are beach bars, the marketplace, and the events our hosts run. Days are the beach, the water, and the boats — snorkeling here is the best of any destination we sell, because Grand Bahama sits on a shallow reef shelf and the water is glass.

Groups that pick Freeport are usually one of two kinds: groups from the Southeast who want an international trip on a short flight and a tight budget, and groups who have done a Mexico spring break and want a slower week. If you want the biggest party, this is not it — read the Cancún guide. If you want the Bahamas with a city and Atlantis attached, read the Nassau guide.

Nightlife and days out

Nights: Port Lucaya Marketplace (live music, the square, a bar for every mood within 200 yards), the beach bars along Lucaya, and the parties at Viva Wyndham Fortuna. Our booze cruise and beach events run through the week.

Days: the Go Blue snorkel cruise is the one thing we tell every group to do — reef, fish, clear water, and a boat bar. Beyond that: Taíno Beach and Gold Rock Beach (the long, empty one in Lucayan National Park), kayaking the mangroves, the Garden of the Groves, and jet-ski or banana-boat rentals on Lucaya Beach. It is a water week, not a club week.

Weather in March

Grand Bahama is the coolest of our five international destinations in March because it is the farthest north. Highs around 77°F, lows in the mid-60s, water in the low-to-mid 70s. Fronts off Florida can bring a breezy or overcast day; bring a layer for nights. (Approximate averages; check a forecast the week before you fly.)

What Freeport actually costs

CostTypical range
Package (hotel, transfers, taxes)$699 – $899; all-inclusive at $899
Round-trip flight to FPOCheapest from Florida; most other cities connect through Fort Lauderdale or Miami
Party package / club accessOptional add-on; see Party Packages
Snorkel cruise / excursionsBudget one
Food and drink (room-only hotels)The Bahamas is priced like Florida or higher — factor this in at Pelican Bay and Flamingo Bay

Freeport starts $400 below Nassau and about the same as Cancún, which makes it the value pick of the Bahamas. At the two room-only hotels, the gap to Viva Wyndham's all-inclusive price often closes once you add a week of meals and drinks.

Getting there

Fly into Grand Bahama International (FPO). Nonstop service is limited — mostly Fort Lauderdale and Miami, under an hour — so groups from outside Florida usually connect through South Florida. Some groups fly to Fort Lauderdale and take the ferry; ask your agent, because it depends on the schedule that season.

Your transfer to the hotel is included and takes about 20 minutes.

You need a passport book valid at least six months past your travel dates. The ferry from Florida accepts a passport card, but flights do not.

How booking works

A $100 deposit per person holds your spot; the balance is paid in interest-free monthly installments. Early-bird pricing is about $200 per person under regular rates and ends as March fills. Freeport has three hotels and the smallest room count on our list, so the all-inclusive at Viva Wyndham Fortuna sells through early for the peak weeks.
